Sneak Peek! new prints + new bags

Our 4 new prints, inspired by the sea. Algae, Laminaria, Waves + Urchin

I'm really in love with this bag, the "Nina" in waterproof steel blue fabric + the Algae print. A brown leather flap + adjustable leather strap. simple and lovely.

Laminaria print in a bold orange. This hand drawn print was a blend of a seaweed in 2 different stages of growth.

Urchin print. This one is going to be very cute on shower curtains!

The "Sophie" wristlet. New design-pleats on both sides + a very finished zipper closure. Plus a wrist strap. It's just so sweet.

New messenger style-leather trim and leather covered strap. The fabric is putty grey with Waves print. This bag has a deep base-6", so you can really fit a load-computer, notebooks + more. The strap is nylon webbing with leather stitched to it, so it's super comfortable to carry. There are a ton of pockets, which would make this an awesome diaper bag.

The new collection will be available on our Etsy site starting February 1, they will also be available with our retailers starting in February.

This Saturday, November 5th from 10am-5pm, Appetite will be @ Dennis' 7 Dees-the eastside garden store on Powell, to join their Holiday Sale.
Ever since we (Erin + Megan of Appetite) were kids, our Mom has been dragging us to gardening stores and talking our ears off about this flower and that shrub. Naturally, it has instilled a real love of gardening, plants, and we have become the kind of people that like to frequent those places. We are so excited to spend an entire Fall day set up outside among the flowers, shrubs, and trees. And there will be lots of other botanically minded artisans, as well as music, and wine (after noon I hope!).
Hope you can make it out for a stroll in the garden and some early holiday shopping!

If you peep through the vintage beaded curtain into my friend Gretchen's bedroom, you can see our Golden Yellow with Rosetta Print Pillows on top of her bed, perfect with her vintage hudson blanket. You can see the other shots of her amazing little apartment, featured today on Design Sponge, here.
I love the layers and textures of her apartment, there is an element of richness and glamour that pairs perfectly with the warmth of pieces gifted and collected over time. I happened to be staying with Gretchen during the photo shoot, I was in town for Renegade Brooklyn, so I was able to enjoy all of the fun behind the scenes. I love that her space feels so immediately like her, and that it is so comfortable to be there.

We recently finished up photos for the Fall 2011 collection, Canyons & Trails. I wanted to share some of my favorite shots and a few behind the scenes pictures from that day. I love the process of picking the clothing, jewelry, and location and styling our friend Hannah, who is such a pleasure to photograph. But it is a ton of work and at the end of the day we were all exhausted.

We shot these photos of the lovely Hannah in my pal Nisey's sweet backyard, just as the Autumn light was beginning to change.
I love that her yard has plenty of cactus, foliage, and chickens & turkeys.

The collection is feeling very Fall to me, I really wanted to branch out from the botanical/floral motifs I have used in past collections and get a little abstract and geometric.

The Canyons & Trails Fall Collection has a southwestern feeling with an updated color scheme, inspired by the colors of Pendleton Wools, the dark and woodsy Pacific Northwest, and the Autumn sun.
I'm excited to be exploring a new direction in subject-more linear and geometric shapes. I am also really excited to be printing in yardage. Previously I was using smaller screens and free-placing the screens on pre-cut fabric. Now with larger screens I can print about 5 yards at a time, which is much faster and so fun to look at when it is complete.

The Pendleton Messenger

For Christmas this year, I promised to make my boy a customized messenger with beautiful brown leather and the Pendleton wool of his choice. Portland has amazing Pendleton resources, including the wool mill Outlet Store, where you can purchase Pendleton by the yard. It took a long time to choose his favorite, but I think he made a great choice-neutral, a little southwestern, great geometry. The biggest challenge of this bag was learning to steer away from my feminine aesthetic to keep the bag masculine. I loved sourcing the brass boating hardware & creating all of the leather components. I'm thrilled with the finished bag, and I hope it is something he can use for years to come.

I am a luggage hoarder. There is something so irresistible about stylish travel and I always want the perfect luggage for the coming trip. I feel the same way about small accessories, so it was a perfect pairing to begin making luggage tags.
The luggage tags are constructed from the end pieces and scraps of my larger wool felt pieces, like laptop sleeves and cases, and they are paired with coordinating scrap leather from my leather pieces, like wallets and bags. The pairing is a cute, purposeful travel accessory made from cast-offs and scrap.
Inside the the luggage tag is a customizable card with designated areas for your contact info. The tag also accommodates business cards or id's. They come in 5 wool felt colors and they are available here

This Saturday! Mississippi Street Fair!

The Mississippi Ave Street Fair is Saturday, July 10th. Appetite will be set up for a special trunk show on 909 N. Beech St at She Bop, from 10am to 7pm.

She Bop is a female friendly sex toy boutique. Appetite has a range of specialized bags exclusively carried at SheBop. These bags include padded single toy bags in mulitple sizes, and small and large travel bags with slots for liquids and accessories as well as room for toys. Each bag features hand-printed canvas exteriors, are lined with low lint fabrics, and have zipper closures.

Last week I finished my first round of orders for my new Spring collection. It was fun to see some of the pieces I had only envisioned but not executed finally come to form, seeing the shapes and colors of the entire collection work together. It is always challenging to see how feasible it is to actually physically manufacture all of the pieces I have designed, I know I tend to start with ideas and enthusiasm and sometimes that doesn't always translate to producing a collection week after week. This collection, thankfully, feels like a breeze!

Pewter and Frost Tote

This week I took a break from editing my Spring collection and made myself this tote. Everyday I carry my laptop, sketch book, cords and gadgets to and from the studio and it was taking it's toll on my purse. I made this tote from super sturdy 10 oz canvas in the perfect graphite grey and paired it with this shimmery pewter leather that has been sitting on my work table, waiting patiently for some inspiration.

I'm so happy with it! It's utilitarian-it holds a laptop, a large sketchbook and all of the contents of my purse. It's my favorite combination of colors-metals and grey. And it's unique-longer and a bit more narrow than a traditional tote, it's striking on the body.

It's been a while since the last update, I have been busy preparing the new Spring collection.

It was nice to take the time to sit down and draw, choose new colors, and even create some new bag shapes.

There are 4 new prints that will be available in the beginning of February, both at the shops that carry my line and online. Today we shot the product shots for the collection, so I am looking forward to sharing the photos when they are ready. I am also really excited to do some editorial photo shoots with all of the new pieces in my Spring collection.

A few months ago, my studio neighbor Kimberli Ransom, who is an amazing photographer, suggested that she & I collaborate on a photo shoot that was styled by her skillful sister Katie. I created a table cloth in sage with my Hens n' Chicks print, and persimmon colored napkins with my Yucca print for this table shot. This photo feels like the end of summer, when the light is the most beautiful, and there is just a hint of the fall of leaves and cooler weather. Now that Thanksgiving is upon us, I am looking for ideas to set my table for the family meal. Here are some inspirations:

Stuffing Birdies

Printing this print requires 2 screens, both are tiny trees, but slightly different. It's a little more work, but it's worth it.

Photoshooting

My sweet friend Alli and I took on the task of shooting some pieces from my new collection of succulent inspired prints. We used the gorgeous and well appointed studio of Gretchen Jones of Mothlove. In addition to being conveniently located down the hall from my studio, Gretchen's spare Southwestern aesthetic was the perfect backdrop for the collection.

I have been using leather for a long time in my pieces, mostly as straps and embellishments in bags, and a range of leather wallets featuring my prints on the leather.

I am really excited to extend my work in leather....this week, amid orders and massive production for Bumbershoot (meaning there really wasn't time to try something new) I created 3 new all leather bags. What can I say, I don't want to get bored!

The bags are all leather exterior, I'm using lighter weight leathers since they are easier to start with. The interiors are lined with hand-printed canvas. I love the finished pieces, and I can't wait to work on more.

Custom Bridesmaid Gift
